Passau Germany | The City of Three Rivers
Known as The City of Three Rivers , Passau is where our journey begins and where our ship departs. The beautiful 17th century baroque skyline mixed with medieval architecture was reflecting over the rivers as if it were frozen in time. As we followed on our walking tour on the narrow streets and alleyways of Passau, we were graced with the ominous sounds of church bells swelling throughout the city, from a sum of nearly 50 churches in the area. we were also lucky enough to sit in on a service being held in the massive medieval cathedral. The melody of the bells on this quiet Sunday morning will be one of my fondest memories of Passau Germany. Also, during our tour we made a pit stop to see gingerbread being made and were able to hear the family history of the sweets shop, which has recipes dating back from the 13th century; the bakery has been in their family for centuries.
Although it began to snow and sleet on the remainder of the tour, and I was almost certain that my toes were going to snap off my body, we still had the luxury of visiting the christmas markets when they opened at 11am. It was amazing to see these artisans who had worked in the same trade for generations. The little vending stands were overflowing with handmade furs and wooden toys it was unbelievable to imagine how simple life must be, to dedicate it so diligently to a specific craft. It was truly a pleasure to experience this little taste of german culture for the day.
