How to Write the Perfect Wedding Vows
Wondering how to write wedding vows from the heart?
Getting married is exhilarating. You and the love of your life are committing to forever together. Congrats! That promise carries so much weight. So how do you craft the perfect words to equal the significance of the moment? The question then becomes as you move further down the line, becomes not how much you love your boo thang.. but how to express that admiration in your vows.
I wanted to write a guide to all my couples getting married on how to write the perfect vows that match you and your love story.
Get some inspiration- read other people's vows. Watch the movie the vow. It has Channing Tatum in it, so I highly recommend it. You can get inspiration from religious backgrounds, movies, poetry, and books.
Talk with your partner- if you two are both wringing your vows, have a sit-down discussion where you agree on the vows' tone. Will, they are humorous, light-hearted, deep, and sentimental. Will you two write your vows together or separately? These are all things to decide on before you put pen to paper.
Include a short story- think of a short story that encompasses your love and give everyone the warm a fuzzies.
Avoid anything too personal or embarrassing- You dont want to give away too much in front of all your friends and family. Focus on the good sweet, and the funny.
Come up with at least three promises- I vow to kill the spiders. Okay, maybe not that one. Remember, a vow is an oath. You are making a promise to your partner, so be specific.
Why them- This is where you talk about all the great things that made you fall in love with your partner. Was it their smile, their hard work ethic, or the way they play with your nieces? Write it down!
When things get tough- It is hard to imagine you will ever not like the beautiful human you are about to marry. Every relationship will hit a rough patch at some point, and your vows should address it.
Reference your future together- You two are about to start a life together. What do you want that future to look like?
Write everything down- do a free-write exercise, write until you cover all the bases listed above.
Then cut the fluff- after you finish free writing, cut out the fluff. Your vows should be about two minutes. Unfortunately, people lose interest quickly, and no one loves your partner as much as you do. They are ready for you to kiss and get the party started!
I hope this short guide was helpful and gets you feeling prepared to write a masterpiece. When you are finished, practice it a few times in front of the mirror or with a friend. Also, if you are anything like me, let someone copy edit it for grammar and clarity. Apply this advice to your vow writing. I guarantee they will sound beautiful and leave everyone at your ceremony speechless. Maybe even in tears.
